Most crochet kits are a hook set, some acrylic yarn and a printed card, packaged to look like more than that. A few are genuinely good, and the difference is almost always whether the yarn is usable and whether the instructions were written by somebody who crochets.
The single most common disappointment is the hooks. A twelve piece set at a low price is usually twelve badly finished aluminium hooks with a burr near the throat that snags the yarn on every stitch. One good hook beats twelve poor ones, every time.
Beginner starter kit, single project
BeginnerUnder 20 pounds
One hook, enough yarn for one item, and a pattern. The honest format, and the best way in.
Amigurumi kit, one animal
Beginner20 to 30 pounds
Includes stuffing and safety eyes, which are the fiddly things to source separately.
Full hook set with case
Beginner15 to 30 pounds
Worth it only if the handles are moulded rubber. Bare aluminium sets are a false economy.
Blanket kit, chunky yarn
Beginner40 to 70 pounds
Expensive because a blanket is a lot of yarn. Check the metreage against the pattern before buying.
Granny square sampler kit
Beginner20 to 35 pounds
Lots of small colours, which is exactly what squares need and what most kits get wrong.
Ergonomic hook set
All levels30 to 60 pounds
Not a luxury if your hands ache. The only category where spending more reliably buys something.
Garment kit with size range
Intermediate60 to 120 pounds
Check it includes yarn for your size, not the smallest.
Tunisian crochet starter kit
Intermediate25 to 45 pounds
Needs a long hook you will not already own, so a kit makes sense here.
Advent or monthly club kit
All levels30 to 80 pounds
Good as a gift, poor value per gram of yarn. Buy it for the surprise, not the materials.
Baby set kit, hat and blanket
Beginner30 to 50 pounds
Check the yarn is machine washable. Several are not, which is a serious flaw for a baby kit.
Crochet kit for children
Beginner15 to 25 pounds
Wants a large hook and thick smooth yarn. Thin yarn and a small hook will end the hobby in an afternoon.
Gift kit with tools and notions
All levels25 to 45 pounds
Stitch markers, a tape measure, scissors and needles. Useful once, and then you own them.
What to check before buying
| Check | Why | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Yarn metreage, not just weight | Grams vary by fibre | Only grams listed |
| Hook handles | Bare aluminium hurts after an hour | No close photograph of the hooks |
| Pattern format | Written and charted is best | “Video link included” and nothing else |
| Yarn washability | Baby and blanket kits especially | No care information at all |
| Size range, for garments | Kits often include only the smallest | One yarn quantity quoted |
Buy a single hook and one ball of yarn before buying any kit at all. Ten pounds tells you whether you enjoy crochet, and it is the cheapest possible way to find out.
Questions
Are crochet kits worth it for beginners?
A single-project kit is. A large multi-tool kit usually is not, because most of the contents go unused and the hooks are often poor.
What should a beginner crochet kit contain?
One good hook in 5.0 mm, enough smooth light-coloured yarn for one project, a blunt needle, and a written pattern.
How much should I spend on my first kit?
Under twenty pounds. Spending more before you know whether you enjoy it is how kits end up in cupboards.
Are expensive hooks worth the money?
Only for the handle. The hook end of a cheap and an expensive hook is nearly identical. If your hand aches, pay for the grip.
What is wrong with cheap hook sets?
Rough finishing near the throat that snags yarn on every stitch, and thin handles that cramp the hand within an hour.
Can I buy the parts separately instead?
Almost always cheaper, and you choose your own yarn. Kits are worth it for amigurumi and Tunisian, where the extras are awkward to source.
